MARA HELPED ANGEL DOWN from the high chair as she cleaned his face. The little guy was anxious to get outside with the other children to pet the animals in the newborn stables, but he wasn’t wearing a jacket. Angry that the others were leaving him, Angel threw a tantrum until he looked up to see Yuńior standing there. A disapproving look on his face warned Angel about his bad behavior.

“Mara, fetch his coat and I will clean his face and hands,” Yuńior told her. “Angel, bad behavior will not get you what you want in this world.”

He spoke in a hushed tone to his youngest brother while a set of eyes watched Yuńior closely. Mara returned with the warm winter coat, bundling up the child, adding a hat and a scarf. She didn’t get a chance to get the mittens on him before he grabbed the door and bolted outside, running as fast as his small legs could carry him to catch the others. Frustration covered Mara’s face.

“Take a break. There are enough adults to watch over the kids,” Yuńior told her.

“Gracias,” she said, giving a weak smile.

“You are very good with him. He is not easy to handle,” he said, trying to comfort her.

“I am better with the babies,” she said, standing close to him.

“We are all better with you around,” Yuńior told her, placing an arm over her shoulder, kissing her on the temple. “Anda tu, take a moment.”

Melissa stepped from the shadows where she had been eavesdropping on the conversation held in Spanish. The houseguest of the Blakemores fascinated her, but what she had witnessed between what she assumed was the nanny the handsome young man, was uncomfortable for her.

“Pardon me,” she said to Mara. “I have collected the dirty laundry from the children. Should I show you where you can wash these?”

Mara took the basket of clothes, giving Melissa the evil eye. She knew the young housekeeper had been ogling both Andres and Yuńior. It was unseemly. She didn’t like it, nor the woman. They had only been in the house for two days and she was trying to one-up Mara.

“Wash,” Mara repeated.

“Sí, wash,” Melissa said in a patronizing tone. “While you are here, I can help you with your English if you like.”

Yuńior moved quickly to stand between the two women, preventing Mara from ripping out Melissa’s throat.

“Mara, leave the laundry, it can be done later,” he said softly, almost pushing her towards the stairs.

Her response to him was in Spanish and Yuńior tried not to smile.

“Does she need help with her English?” Melissa asked again, sparking more ire in Mara.

“My English is just fine, thank you,” Mara responded, with a sister girl neck roll. She, much like Andres, was fascinated with African American culture and often spent a great deal of her free time watching Love & Hip over the internet. She began to clap her hands together sister-girl style to make her point.

“I don’t need you to tell me what to do or how to do my job.
